Anaerobic Exercise
Anaerobic is defined as not needing the presence of oxygen. Anaerobic exercise is exercise that builds the muscle through tension. Activities like this are tiring and hard to sustain for a long period of time, which is why anaerobic exercises are done for a short period of time at a high intensity.
To understand the difference between aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise, think of a sprinter and then a marathon runner. A sprinter uses an all-out burst of energy for a short distance and time. On the other hand, marathon runners don't just use a quick burst of energy. They spread out the energy distribution. Their energy and effort is sustained over a longer period of time and distance. The sprinter is exhibiting an anaerobic activity while the marathon runner doing aerobic exercise.
Common anaerobic exercises include:
Unlike aerobics, anaerobic exercise is at a very high intensity and is done for a short period of time. This kind of exercise is typically used in non-endurance sports because it builds power and lean muscle mass.
Compared to aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise has its own benefits. It helps to build lean muscles and the more muscle you have, the better your body will burn calories. This is a great way to manage you weight because muscles use large amounts of calories. Even though the exercise is for short periods of time, it can also help build your endurance levels. It can also help improve your VO2 max, which is the maximum amount of oxygen a person can use during exercise. As your VO2 max improves so will your cardio-respiratory fitness. Both aerobics and anaerobic exercise have their own health benefits. |
A very common anaerobic exercise is heavy weight lifting. It requires a lot of strength but only for a short period of time. You do the weight lifting in sets and then repeat those sets. That way, you can lift heavy weights, take a small break and repeat. The weights should be heavy enough that you use a lot of energy and effort just to complete the set.
The YMCA in Point Loma, has an ever growing gym for people to work out in. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, but when they are older, if they take the full orientation of the gym, teens are allowed to access the gym without adult supervision. The gym is a great place to work on anaerobic exercises. There are weights for heavy weight-lifting and there is equipment to assist with other activities. Point Loma: Peninsula YMCA Most people do a variety of aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Depending on what your health goals are, certain exercises are better than others. If you play a sport, your coach may recommend more aerobic workouts or more anaerobic workouts.
